BOOK
OF EXODUS
CHAPTER 15
We’re glad you could join us again for
today’s Daily Bread. Our last story was a very memorable one about when God
parted the Red Sea so His people could pass through it on dry land. Then
when Pharaoh and his host followed to capture God’s people and bring them
back to slavery, the Lord closed the sea on Pharaoh and his army and killed
each and every one of them.
The children of Israel were so very
relieved. Moses and God’s people sang a song to God that you can read in
Exodus 15:1-19. There are several places in the Bible that mention Moses
speaking the words of or writing songs, so when you hear about the song of
Moses, remember there are more than one.
Remember Miriam, Moses sister, who
watched as Moses was taken out of the river by Pharaoh’s daughter when he
was a baby? Miriam was a prophetess, gifted with spiritual insight and she
was with her brothers Moses and Aaron. If you have seen on television,
family celebrations where people of ethnic backgrounds dance to music that
is not what is native to you, you can sense the happiness of the celebration
in their hearts. Miriam, being older than her brother, which means she was
more than 80, took a timbrel (a small hand drum or tambourine) and all the
women followed her dancing with timbrels. It was a joyous time.
Moses led the children of Israel from
the Red sea to the wilderness of Shur. They are on the far west side of the
Sinai Peninsula traveling south and they went three days without finding
water. They came to a city called Marah, but they couldn’t drink the water
there because it was polluted. The people grumbled against Moses,
complaining, What will we drink?
Moses prayed to the Lord and the Lord
showed him a tree. Moses threw the tree into the waters and they were
purified. God gave them an order to test them. He said, If you will
diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God and will do what is
right in His sight, follow His commandments and keep all His laws, I won’t
strike you with the plagues that I brought on the Egyptians, because I am
the Lord that heals you. That must have been quite an experience, right
before your eyes, for polluted waters to be “healed” and become pure. God
is so magnificent at analogies.
They traveled further south and when
they came to Elim, there were twelve wells of water and 70 palm trees there,
so they camped there by the waters.
When you read the word wilderness, you
may think of an area uninhabited by human beings, overgrown, etc. Keep in
mind that this wilderness that God’s people were traveling through was in a
desert region. The days were arid and the nights were cold. Having God on
your side, would be a definite advantage and the children of Israel just saw
another example of that.
When we come back next time, we’ll find out if the children of Israel were
patient during their test as hunger becomes their next issue in the
wilderness. Watch for that next time, at Daily Bread.
