JOHN CHAPTER 13 & 14;
THE LAST SUPPER OF JESUS CHRIST
The first Passover was an indication of what would
happen to Jesus. In our study, weíre still in that four day period
between when Jesus entered Jerusalem and His death.
But before we begin I want to share a story
that Jesus said was to be told EVERY time the Gospel was preached. It
is the story of Mary who anointed the feet of Jesus at the house of
Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel
shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this,
that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.

THE LAST SUPPER OF JESUS CHRIST STORY
WITH THE LAST SUPPER OF JESUS CHRIST MESSAGE
And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she
knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an
alabaster box of ointment, And stood at his feet behind him
weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe
them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and
anointed them with the ointment.
Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw
it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a
prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is
that toucheth him: for she is a sinner. And Jesus answering said
unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith,
Master, say on.
Jesus said Ö There was a certain creditor which
had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other
fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them
both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? Simon
answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most.
And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon,
Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest
me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears,
and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Thou gavest me no
kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to
kiss my feet. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this
woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are
many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is
forgiven, the same loveth little. And he said unto her, Thy sins
are forgiven. And they that sat at meat with him began to say
within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? And he
said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
is this MARY? There are a few women with the name Mary mentioned as
having something to do with Jesus. Mary, the Mother of Jesus, Mary
Magdalene, Mary the sister of Martha which were sisters of Lazarus
whom Jesus brought back from the dead, Mary the wife of Cleophas, Mary
the mother of James and Joses Ö Most people believe it to be Mary
Magdalene that Jesus was referring to when He said to tell her story
every time the Gospel was preached. In fact the movie ďJesus of
Nazareth portrays it as being Mary Magdalene.
Well unless Mary the sister of Lazarus was
also Mary Magdalene, someone has some explaining to do: John 11:1-2
certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and
her sister Martha. (It was that MARY which anointed the Lord with
ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was
believe that they are one in the same while others dispute this. I do
not seek to debate scripture but rather to share this TRUTH Ö Since
Jesus made it clear that this woman was to be remembered when the
Gospel was told and John makes it clear that it was Mary the sister of
Martha and Lazarus Ö. We should make it clear that it was Mary, the
sister to Martha and Lazarus that did this act that Jesus felt should
be a memorial to her.
back to the story ... During that time, Satan entered into Judas and he
went to the chief priests and asked them, What will you give me if I
turn Jesus over to you? The chief priests were happy about this, and
they promised Judas thirty pieces of silver. This was foretold in
And I said
unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not,
forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.
From then on, Judas waited for the opportunity to betray Jesus without
THE LAST SUPPER OF JESUS CHRIST STORY ON THE LAST SUPPER OF JESUS CHRIST EVENT WITH THE LAST SUPPER OF JESUS CHRIST TRUTH
On the first day of the feast of unleavened bread,
the disciples came to Jesus asking Him where He wanted to eat the
Passover. Jesus sent Peter and John saying, Go into the city and
youíll meet a man holding a pitcher of water. Follow him, and wherever
he goes in, say to the owner of the house, The Master says, Where is
the guestroom where Iíll eat the Passover with my disciples? Heíll
show you a large upper room furnished and prepared. Thatís where
youíll make ready for us.
In the evening, Jesus arrived with the twelve
Apostles. Jesus said, Truly I say to you, that one of you will betray
me. Understandably, the Apostles were very upset and they each began
to say to Him, Lord, is it me? Jesus answered, One of you who is at
this table, will betray me. The Son of man will go, in the plan of
God, but woe to the man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would
be better for that man if he hadnít been born.
Then Judas asked, Master, is it me? And Jesus said
to him, You said it. Now, you may think that Judas was mocking by
asking Jesus if it was him, I mean, after all, he already made the
deal to hand Jesus over, how could he not know? But donít forget, the devil
was working through Judas. It was the devil conspiring with the chief
priests, not Judas. Remember the blind man who was blind from birth
and Jesus said that the reason he was blind was for the glory that God
was given the moment he was healed. Likewise, there was a reason for
Judas doing what he did. Itís easy to look on Judas scornfully, but
donít forget, his role was necessary for our salvation. If Jesus
hadnít died for our sins, where would we be? Perhaps Judas didnít
remember making the deal because while the devil worked through Judas,
it was the devilís actions, therefore, he asked Jesus, Is it me?
Notice that there was no reaction from the other 11 when Jesus said
that Judas would betray Him. God was still keeping the meaning of some
things hidden from them.
Then Jesus took bread, He blessed it, and broke it,
and gave it to the disciples saying, Take this and eat, this is my
body which is given up for you. Do this in remembrance of me. When
supper was ended, Jesus took the cup and gave thanks. He gave it to
His disciples, saying, Take and drink all of it, because this is my
blood of the new testament, which is shed for you and for many so
their sins may be forgiven. But I wonít drink of the fruit of the vine again until the day
when I drink it new with you in my Fatherís Kingdom.
Youíre the ones who have abided with me in my
temptations, and I appoint to you a kingdom, as my Father has
appointed to me, that you may eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom,
and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (Remember what
Jesus said here, because weíll be discussing it further later on.)
Jesus left the table and poured water into a basin,
and began to wash the disciplesí feet, and wipe them with a towel.
When it was Simon Peterís turn, Peter said, Lord, do you intend to
wash my feet? This just made no sense to any of them. You can imagine,
the awkward feeling that they all had, especially after Mary anointed
Jesusí feet not long before. Jesus was the Messiah, the King, they had
to be thinking that they should be the ones washing His feet.
Jesus answered Peter, You donít realize what Iím
doing now but youíll understand later. Peter said, Iíll never allow
you to wash my feet. But Jesus replied, If I donít wash your feet, you
have nothing to do with me. Peter said, Lord, wash not only my feet,
but also my hands and my head. Then Jesus said, He that is washed,
needs only to wash his feet and is clean every bit, and you are clean, except
for one (referring to Judas).
After Jesus sat back down, He said, Do you realize
what Iíve done to you? You call me Master and Lord, and that, I am. If
I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you too, should
wash one anotherís feet. Iíve given you an example, that you should do
as Iíve done to you.
THE LAST SUPPER OF JESUS CHRIST WARNING ON THE LAST SUPPER OF JESUS CHRIST BETRAYAL
Then Jesus said, Most assuredly, one of you will
betray me. The disciples werenít sure who He was talking about. John
was leaning on Jesus and Peter motioned to John to ask who Jesus
meant. So John asked, Lord, who is it? Jesus answered, Itís the one
who I give the bread to after Iíve dipped it. Jesus gave it to Judas
and after that, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, What
youíre going to do, do quickly.
None of the others knew why Jesus said this to
Judas. They thought that because Judas took care of the money, that
Jesus told him to go buy the things that they needed for the feast or
that he should give something to the poor. After Judas received the
dipped bread, it was nighttime and he went out. After he was gone,
Jesus said, Little children, Iíll only be with you a
little longer. Youíll look for me and as I told the Jewish people,
Where I go, you canít come, so now I give you a new commandment. Love
one another as I have loved you. By this, all men will know that
youíre my disciples, if you have love for one another. Where I go, you
canít follow me now, but youíll follow me later.
Peter said to Jesus, Lord, why canít I follow you
now? Iíll lay down my life for your sake. The Lord answered him,
Simon, Simon, the devil wanted to take you so he could sift you like
wheat, but Iíve prayed for you that your faith wonít falter, and when
youíre converted, strengthen your brothers. Peter said, Lord, Iím
ready to go with you, both into prison and to death. Jesus replied, I
tell you Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day, until you deny
three times that you know me. But Peter spoke even more emphatically,
If I should die with you, I wonít deny you in any way. All the others
said the same. But Jesus said, All of you will be offended because of
me this night, for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the
sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad (Zechariah
13:7). Every man will go
to his own home and will leave me alone, and yet Iím not alone,
because the Father is with me. But after Iím risen again, Iíll go
ahead of you into Galilee.
Jesus then said, Donít be worried. You believe in
God, believe in me too. In my Fatherís house are many mansions. If it
werenít so, I wouldíve told you. Iím going to prepare a place for you.
And If I go and prepare a place for you, Iíll come again and get you,
so you can be with me there too, and where I go, youíll understand and
youíll know the way.
Thomas said, Lord, we donít know where youíre going,
how can we know the way? Jesus said, I am the way, the TRUTH and the
life. No man comes to the Father, except through me. If you knew me,
you should have known my Father too, and from now on, you know Him,
and have seen Him.
Philip said, Lord, show us the Father, and itíll
satisfy us. Jesus said, Have I been with you this long, and you still
donít know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father, so how
can you say, Show us the Father? Donít you believe that Iím in the
Father and the Father is in me? The words I tell you donít come from
me, but from the Father that abides in me, He does the works. Believe
that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe me
for the things I do. Whoever believes in me, the things that I do, he
will do also, and even greater things, because Iím going to my Father.
And whatever you ask in my name, Iíll do, so my Father may be honored
in the Son. If you ask anything in my name, Iíll do it.
This is why when you pray, itís important to pray in
the name of Jesus Christ. The next thing that Jesus told them, is
another thing that they wouldnít understand until later, but is a
vital part of their future and of our lives today as well. Remember as
you read this, that weíre all Jesusí disciples as well, and what He
said applies to our lives today just as it did when He taught the
disciples in their time.
Jesus continued, If you love me, keep my
commandments. Iíll pray to the Father, and Heíll give you another
Comforter, so He may abide (stay) with you for ever. He is the Spirit
of truth, whom the world canít receive, because it doesnít see Him or
know Him. But you know Him, because He lives with you and will be in
you. I wonít leave you comfortless. Iíll come to you. In a little
while, the world wonít see me anymore, but you see me. Because I live,
you will live too. On that day, youíll know that I am in my Father and
you are in me and I am in you. Whoever has my commandments and keeps
them is the one who loves me, and the one who loves me will be loved
of my Father and Iíll love him and show myself to him.
THE LAST SUPPER OF JESUS CHRIST TRUTH OF THE LAST SUPPER OF JESUS CHRIST BLESSING BRINGING FORTH THE LAST SUPPER OF JESUS CHRIST HOPE
The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the
Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things, and bring
all things to your remembrance, whatever I have said to you. Iíve told
you this before it happens so that when it happens youíll believe.
After this, I wonít talk much with you because the prince of this
world (Satan) is coming and has no interest in me. But so the world
may know that I love the Father and as the Father commands, I do. Now,
letís go from here.
So, letís just summarize a little bit. The Apostles
and Jesus are celebrating the Passover together, Jesus knowing that
His death is around the corner, the Apostles looking forward to Jesus
reigning in an upcoming Kingdom of power and glory in Jerusalem. After
supper, Jesus washes the Apostlesí feet as they nervously wonder why
the Messiah is doing the chores of a servant. To add to it, Jesus
tells them that one of them will betray Him. The surprise of this
confuses them, but then comes the real shocker . . . before morning,
Peter will deny his Lord thrice!
Things arenít going the way the Apostles had hoped,
but Jesus has been warning them for months now that what awaits Him in
Jerusalem is a Cross, not a throne. Now He tells them that He wonít be
with them much longer, but not to worry because Heís gonna send
someone to guide them. He tells them the wonderful news about the Holy
Spirit, but the moment is too intense and God has hidden the meaning
of this from them. They canít understand what a gift this really is,
but just think of what Jesus said for a moment,
the Holy Spirit will help you to remember
everything I ever said to you!
