SPIRIT OF ELIJAH
CHRISTIANITY
OASIS HAS PROVIDED YOU WITH THIS SPIRIT OF ELIJAH STUDY. MANY
HAVE HEARD OF THE SPIRIT OF ELIJAH BUT FEW UNDERSTAND THE DEPTHS OF
THE MEANING OF THE SPIRIT OF ELIJAH. LET'S EXPLORE THE TRUTH OF THE SPIRIT
OF ELIJAH TOGETHER, SHALL WE?
MATTHEW CHAPTER 11
LUKE 7:19-35
Jesus’ disciples went out and preached the gospel,
anointed the sick with oil and healed them, and cast out many devils.
Can you imagine … ordinary men doing such miraculous things? Their
faith must have been remarkable!
John the Baptist, at that time was still in Herod's
prison for speaking TRUTH. Jesus went out into different cities to
preach and John had heard about the miracles that Jesus was doing.
John sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus, Are you the Messiah or
should we expect another? Jesus said to them, Go and tell John again
about the things that you've been hearing about and seeing. The blind
can see, the lame can walk, the lepers are clean and the deaf can
hear, the dead are raised up and the poor have the Gospel preached to
them. And blessed is anyone who is not ashamed of me.
As they left, Jesus talked to the crowds about John.
What did you go to the wilderness to see? A reed shaken in the wind? A
man dressed in soft clothing? People who wear soft clothes live in
palaces. What did you go to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and
more than a prophet. John is the one of whom it is written, Behold, I
send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before
thee ( Malachi
3:1). Truly I say to you, of all
human beings, there hasn't been a greater one born than John the
Baptist. Even so, whoever is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater
than he. (The least in Heaven is better than the greatest on earth!)
Jesus continued, And from the days of John the
Baptist until now, the Kingdom of Heaven suffereth violence, and the
violent take it by force. For all the prophets and the law prophesied
until John. And if you will receive (accept) it, this is
Elijah,
which was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Let's look at that last paragraph and figure out
just what it means. Since John the Baptist arrived, there is violence
in Heaven and the violent take it by force? That's a hard thing to
imagine, isn't it? We think of Heaven as the most peaceful place we
can imagine. Maybe the next sentence will help us out.
All the prophets and the law prophesied until
John.
Okay, we know from the
Book of Job
that satan stands in line with the Angels as to
accuse Christians whenever he tricks us into anything and he wants to
tattle on us to God, so we know there are fallen angels and devils
that have or had access to Heaven. But up until John the Baptist's
arrival, they didn't know how much time they had to do as much damage
as they could to as many souls as they could. As long as John wasn't
born yet, the clock was still ticking with no end in sight.
Well, now that John has entered the picture, they
KNOW that he's paving the way for Jesus and now the alarm on their
time clock is set. Their time is limited. Whatever they heard from the
prophets up until now, was about to come to pass. The devil had 4000
years so far to be prince of the earth, now the Prince of Heaven has
come to stir things up a bit. Another thing to remember, is that the
devil knows scripture and so he knows about the time of the Jewish
people and the time of the Gentiles, and he can do math too, so he
must be a little annoyed that his time is now limited. Violence in
Heaven? You better believe that all of satan's angels aren't quietly
standing in line anymore since they got the news. Nope, they're pushin'
and shovin' and cuttin' in line and puttin' up a pretty big fuss as
you can imagine. Not only is their time limited, but now they've got
this Jesus to deal with, which really cramps their style when it comes
to the soul stealing game.
Let's take the next sentence. And if you will
believe it, this is Elijah, which was for to come. The spirit
of Elijah was in John the Baptist. If you recall, when John the
Baptist first started preaching, the people asked him if he was
Elijah. The reason they asked was because in
Malachi 4:5
it says: Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming
of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And he shall turn the heart
of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their
fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. This is also
what the Angel of the Lord told Zacharias in
Luke 1:17.
An interesting study for how God uses spirits to enter the souls of
human's that He is using would be the
Two Witnesses
from the book of Revelation.
The next sentence is one that Jesus says many times.
He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Usually, He says this when
He's speaking in parables. He's telling us to figure out what He
means. How many times have you read something in the Bible, and you
didn't understand it so you just gave up on it in frustration? On
occasions when you persisted or at a later time when you figured
something out, you can't believe that it wasn't clear the first time,
because now it seems as plain as the nose on your face (or the ears on
your head).
Isaiah 6:9-13
also explains that the Lord closed the understanding of those who
choose not to believe. So, Jesus is saying, if you have it in your
heart to understand, hear this.
But what can I compare this generation to? It's like
children sitting in the street and calling to their friends saying,
We've played music for you but you haven't danced, we've cried for you
but you haven't regretted. See, John came neither eating or drinking
(not doing anything that might make people question his
righteousness), yet they say he's possessed by a devil. The Son of man
(Jesus) came eating and drinking, and they say, Look, a glutton and a
drunk, a friend of tax collectors and sinners. In other words, Jesus
is saying, it doesn't matter to this generation if God Himself comes
and tells you that He's here and salvation is right in front of you,
you're not gonna believe it. But wisdom is justified by her children .
. . Wisdom is shown true of all her children . . . The wise will
believe it!
Jesus accused the cities where most of His miracles
were done because John and Jesus preached repentance for salvation and
they didn't repent. Then Jesus said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of
Heaven and earth, because you've hidden these things from the wise and
prudent and have revealed them to children because it seemed right to
you. All things are given to me from my Father and nobody knows the
Son, but God, and nobody knows God except the Son, and whoever the Son
shows Him to. Come to me, all you that toil and are burdened and I'll
give you rest. Hear my message and learn from me; for I am meek and
lowly in heart and you will find rest for your soul. What I ask of you
is easy and the burden I ask you to bear is light.
Again, what Jesus said in just a few Words, has so
much more meaning than anyone else's few words ever could?
