The Light of the World Jesus Christ

So great to have you back again for more Daily Bread! In our last study, Paul was explaining how to live by Faith with the spiritual gifts that the Lord has blessed us with. In this chapter he'll tell us even more ways to walk in the light of the Lord.

Ephesians 5:1-2

1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour [fragrance].

A couple of things come to mind when reading these two simple verses. First, the first verse tells us to follow God as dear children. Some have had bad experiences with their parents or guardians. God does not want you to compare Him to that. He is your Heavenly Father, who loves you more than anything. You are dear children. Innocent, trusting, dependent, respectful, protected ... Loved, which covers all the aforementioned. We are to walk in Love, as Christ has loved us and died for us. His death was His sacrifice ... His gift to God on our behalf, because it was the only thing good enough to reconcile all the wrong that man had done. God found that to be a sweet smelling savor. Think of God being disappointed with mankind and then Jesus sacrifice for us was like (for lack of a better analogy at the moment) aromatherapy.

So try and walk in that kind of love. When the Lord says love one another as I have loved you, think of these things.

Paul gives a list of things that we as Christiana should never be found accused of. These include:

  • fornication
  • all uncleanness
  • covetousness
  • filthiness
  • foolish talking
  • jesting
  • whoremongering
  • idolatry

None of these has any inheritance in the Kingdom of God. Incidentally, if you are behaving yourself like dear children following God, you have no desire to do any of these things. Instead, give thanks.

Since we are created in the image of God, unless you are born of a barbarian tribe and have no knowledge of good and evil, the Holy Spirit within you allows you to be sensitive to what is righteous behavior and what is not. If you were once ignorant of this and in the darkness, you are no longer, because you are dear children of the light. Do not listen to people who tell you different because those things in the list above that others will try and lure you into, will release the wrath of God and you will be included with the children of disobedience on Judgment Day instead of with God's dear children.

So all those gifts, blessings, fruits of the Spirit fall into one unmistakable category ... All goodness and righteousness and Truth. These qualities demonstrate what is acceptable to the Lord.

Ephesians 5:11-24

11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove [warn against] them.
12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
13 But all things that are reproved [evil things] are made manifest [known] by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest [clear] is light.
14 Wherefore He saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light [Isaiah 60:1].
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly [carefully], not as fools, but as wise,
16 Redeeming [making good use of] the time, because the days are evil [we live in evil times].
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess [it will only ruin you]; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
21 Submitting yourselves one to another [putting others above yourselves] in the fear of God.
22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and He is the saviour of the body.
24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

Jesus Light of the World Bible Verse Truth
The Light of the World Jesus Can Save

Here's a question for you. Why did God make woman in the first place? Genesis 2:20 says that she was meant to be a help for him. She wasn't created to be equal to him, or to compete with him. She was created to be submissive. Let me also emphasize the part where it says "as to the Lord." In other words, treat your husband with the same kind of respect as you would the Lord. You wouldn't feel the need to compete with, or be equal to, or wield authority over the Lord, so likewise, be submissive to your husband. In addition, you should consider how many women there are (or rather aren't) that walk in Christ in this way. It should be looked at as a redeeming quality, instead of defeat, as the world has taught women to view it. The Bible has given the ingredients that women need to be found righteous in the eyes of the Lord ... Virtuous Woman.

This does not mean women are men's slaves or are to be treated poorly. In fact, it's just the opposite. Paul continues ...

Ephesians 5:25-33

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it;
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word,
27 That He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord [does] the church:
30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones.
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery [a hidden truth]: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence [respect] her husband.

Jesus Light of the World Bible Verse Hope
The Light of the World Jesus is a Gift

If you're a Christian, you have to be simply horrified at the television shows that depict the promiscuity of husbands and wives of today's world. They teach that sin is acceptable and they promote everything that is against the Bible. The problem is that most people have adapted to the new trends and distinguishing the difference between right and wrong has become next to (but not) impossible. It is truly sad.

The answer is simple. The world teaches one thing and the Bible teaches another. Cannot serve both God and the devil. Choose ... Before it is chosen for you. Because to do nothing is still having made a choice.

In the Lord's eyes are these new trends being taught any different than teaching children that sin is acceptable? We're all His children. Do you think it matters to Him if the child is 8 or 18 or 38 or 78 years old?

Jesus Light of the World Bible Verse Summary
The Light of the World Jesus Conclusion

It's time that people stop to realize that this is the kind of behavior that Paul talks about in every one of his letters. It's called evil, temptation, sin, wickedness, and many other things that will do nothing but lead your soul to death. How do you deal with things like this? Put on your armor.

Come on back next time and we'll find out about the armor of God in the conclusion of Paul's letter to the Ephesians and the faithful in Christ, right here at Daily Bread!
