THE FIRST EPISTLE OF PAUL THE APOSTLE TO THE CORINTHIANS
CHAPTER 11
CHRISTIAN PATH TRUTH THE CHRISTIAN WALK WITH GOD JOURNEY
Nice to see you once again! It's a joy to have you here to share more Daily Bread. As
we've been studying the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians, we've been
learning quite a lot about the struggles that people have in their walk of
Faith, and how to deal with them.
Don't forget that
there was a wide mixture of people that Paul was writing to in Corinth. Even
though he was the Apostle of the Gentiles, there were still Jewish people
who lived in Corinth who were converted to Christianity as well. They were
many people with many different beliefs, and Paul was guiding them to one
common goal ... Faith.
Be followers of Christ, as I am.
Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things,
and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
CHRISTIAN PATH ATTRIBUTES THE CHRISTIAN WALK WITH GOD ADVENTURE
Wait a minute, what ordinances is he talking about? In the book of Acts, Luke referred to
this as THE WAY.
There are "ways" that Christians follow. The Christian Path
... Some examples are: Love one another, be hospitable, be meek,
abstain from fornication, evil, and fleshly desires, be holy, help the
fatherless and the widowed, just to name a few. Basically, living
righteously, and godly is THE WAY. You may know that Jesus said,
John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him,
I am THE WAY, the TRUTH, and the
LIFE: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
|
Next, in his Christian walk Bible lesson, Paul talks
about the issue of men and women having their head covered or uncovered when
they pray or prophesy. He starts out by showing us the "chain of command" so
to speak:
CHRISTIAN PATH CONCERNS THE CHRISTIAN WALK WITH GOD QUEST
The head of every man is Christ;
and the head of the woman is the man;
and the head of Christ is God.
God
Christ
Man
Woman
To boil it all down,
since the man is the image and glory of God, to cover his head would be to
dishonor it. The woman, being in subjection to the man, however, should have
her head covered.
1 Corinthians 11:10
For this cause ought the woman to have power on her
head because of the angels. |
What in the world could that mean?
CHRISTIAN PATH WARNING THE CHRISTIAN WALK WITH GOD PITFALLS
First of
all, you may have guessed, the "power on her head" or
the covering and/or veil symbolizes the authority of
her husband.
Because of the Angels ... This may be referring to the
ministering Angels which are always present, but in
public it might be offensive to them since Angels
themselves cover their faces before the Lord:
Isaiah 6:2
Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings;
with twain he covered his face, and with twain he
covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. |
And though the woman is
subject to the man, they were made for each other ...
They are not independent or separate from one another.
Genesis 2:18
And the LORD God said, It is not good that the
man should be alone; I will make him an help
meet for him. |
CHRISTIAN PATH GIFTS THE CHRISTIAN WALK WITH GOD BLESSINGS
They were meant to be a
mutual comfort and blessing, not one a slave and the
other an oppressor. They are a compliment to one
another. And just as it is the will of God that a
woman be in submission to a man, it is also His will
that a man not abuse his power over a woman.
Then Paul says ... Decide
for yourself, is it right for a woman to pray
uncovered? He points out that society (particularly at
that time) would lift an eyebrow at a woman with short
hair and a man with long hair ... They might be
considered as contending with their natural gender, so
to speak. So, basically Paul tells them that if anyone
in Corinth thinks that for a woman to appear in public
unveiled ... There is no such custom in the other
churches of God.
It's about time
for a little Daily Bread Stick. This is a general rule to remember when you
read your Bible. How many times do you suppose the Bible has been rewritten
and translated and re-translated since it was originally written? In fact,
when you read Daily Bread, you're reading yet another "interpretation" of it, so
when you're reading the text out of your Bible and something seems awry,
this may be the reason. Paul is very consistent on his teachings about law
and Faith. Of that, you can be certain. So you don't have to let your hair
grow long, or cut it short to please the Lord. The long and short of it all
is, give Him glory in your heart.
CHRISTIAN PATH DEBATE THE CHRISTIAN WALK WITH GOD HOPE
I have an
interesting question for you? Was Jesus' hair long? And what about the vow
of the Nazarite
Numbers 6:5? When a man takes the vow of the Nazarite, he is separating
himself or dedicating a certain amount of time to God. Why would this holy vow
forbid a man to cut his hair if it was shameful? Even though it seems this
vow was voluntary, wasn't it part of the Jewish "law," and is that shameful?
Have you ever seen a picture of the last supper? Do each and every one of
the Apostles have long hair? Was it a new fad to have short hair in Paul's
day? Maybe. Is long hair even really the issue here or was it women being
covered in public? Just more points to ponder. Now let's get back to our study.
Though there were things that Paul had applauded the Corinthians for earlier
in this chapter, there was also something that disturbed him that was happening in the
church of Corinth. He makes no bones about his thoughts on the matter.
When they gathered
together for the Lord's supper, first of all, there
were cliques among them. Remember at the beginning of
the epistle when Paul warned them of the contentions
they had because some believed they were baptized of
Paul and some of Apollos and some of Peter? These were
probably some of the cliques.
CHRISTIAN PATH AND DIVISION THE CHRISTIAN WALK WITH GOD TRIALS
Paul points out that
naturally there are divisions so that those who are
upright in heart and those who are not can be exposed.
When they gathered to
celebrate the "Lord's Supper," they would bring their
own meals and eat separately instead of sharing
together, and some were full (drunken) and others were
yet hungry. What's this all about? Paul asks with a
heavy heart. Don't you have houses to eat and to drink
in ... Do you want to make the church of God look
contemptible by embarrassing the needy? What can I say
about this? I'm bewildered!
Does this sound like the world today,
still? The lowly are still looked down upon. The wealthy still seek
recognition, and even in the church, one acts better than another. Paul
continues:
CHRISTIAN PATH RULES THE CHRISTIAN WALK WITH GOD ON EATING
1 Corinthians 11:23-27
For I have received of the
Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That
the Lord Jesus the same night in
which He was betrayed took bread: And when He
had given thanks, He brake it, and said,
Take, eat: this
is my body, which is broken for you: this do in
remembrance of me. After the same manner also
He took the cup, when He had supped, saying,
This cup is the
new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as
ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye
eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew
the Lord's death till he come. Wherefore
whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this
cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of
the body and blood of the Lord. |
Paul elaborates:
But let a man
judge his own actions whether he is eating in loving
memory of the death of Christ or if he is eating as
though it were a common meal, because he who eats
unworthily, invites damnation.
For this reason many are weak and sickly among you, and many have even died.
CHRISTIAN PATH FACTS THE CHRISTIAN WALK WITH GOD VOYAGE
Did you read that?
There are so many things that we don't know. How many people, even in the
world today, suffer illness and death because of actions that they don't
realize are unrighteous in the Lord's eyes, yet because of today's society,
are accepted? But doe they even bother to find out? Paul says:
If we would just judge our own selves,
if we would take a look at our own works,
if we would take the effort to discern what is unrighteous,
then we would not be judged.
But when we're judged, we're chastened by the Lord,
so we won't be condemned with the wicked.
Therefore, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait one for another.
And if any man hunger, let him eat at home;
so your gathering together doesn't bring judgment.
And anything else about the matter, I'll settle when I visit.
CHRISTIAN PATH CONCLUSION THE CHRISTIAN WALK WITH GOD SUMMARY
We can apply this Christian Walk Bible
message to more than just food. What about spiritual gifts? What about those
who, in the body of Christ, are the baby finger, instead of the eye? Do we,
in front of others, flaunt our gifts? Do we look down on others who don't
seem as important? Never forget, looks are deceiving, especially when it
comes to invisible (spiritual) things.
Speaking of spiritual gifts, that's what our next
Christian Walk Bible study is about, so be sure to hurry
back for more Daily Bread.
