Walk in the Light of Truth Quest

Great to have you back once again to share some more Daily Bread! In the first chapter of John's first letter, John urges us, as we walk in the light, that we need to confess our sins continually, and allow the blood of Christ to cleanse us, bringing us out of darkness. Not only should we walk in the light, but we must walk in love, in the image of our Father. Love was a very important thing to John, as you can tell when you read his writing in the Gospel, because he refers to himself several times as the disciple that Jesus loved. Let's read on and see what John's message is about love.

What does walk in the Light mean and how do we walk in the Light?

Ephesians 5:8

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

1 John 1:7

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

My little children, I write you these things, so that you won't sin. And if any man does sin, Jesus Christ the righteous, defends us to the Father. He is the atoning sacrifice (see Feast Shadows - Day of Atonement) for our sins, and the sins of the entire world. And if we keep His commandments, we're certain that we know Him. Whoever says, I know Him, and doesn't keep His commandments, is a liar, and the Truth isn't in him. But the love of God is perfected in whoever keeps His Word, and by this we realize that we are in Him (we are of Him, created in His image, His children). Whoever says Jesus lives in him, should walk as Jesus walked.

Brethren, this is nothing new that I write to you, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning.

Biblical Light Meaning
Walk in the Light of Truth Path

John is talking about when Jesus said:

John 13:34-35

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

But, there is a new commandment that I write to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is past and the true light now shines. Whoever claims to be in the light, and hates his brother, is really still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is no need for stumbling in him. But he that hates his brother is in darkness, he walks in darkness and doesn't know where he's going, because darkness has blinded his eyes.

You might have noticed at the beginning of this chapter that John calls all the saints little children. Considering that John was very elderly when writing this letter, it is understandable why he would refer to the recipients as little children ... Also concerning their maturity in Christ compared to his, little children is a term that seems appropriate. It is also a term of endearment.

Next he explains why he is writing to each, little children - either literally (young children) or babes in Christ, fathers - aged, and young men - those in the prime of life. John is repetitive in this explanation, and remember as you read through it, that one of his main objectives it seems, is to make everyone know, that they know the Father, and these are instances of evidence as to how they know Him. I've color coded the sentences that are addressed to each group in the same color so you can study it.

I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven, for His name's sake.

I write to you, fathers, because you have known Him that is from the beginning.

I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the wicked one.

I write to you, little children, because you have known the Father.

I have written to you, fathers, because you have known Him that is from the beginning.

I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the Word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.

So, why is John repeating himself? As we all know, repetition is a very effective way of teaching and emphasizing something. John continues:

Love not the world, or the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Because all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh, and the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world ends, and the desires of it: but he that does the will of God lives for ever.

What does this mean, love not the world. You may be wondering because that ever so popular Bible verse says,

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Love not the world, is referring to the things that the world teaches. Don't love things that are ungodly, or any of the things that Satan blinds people into believing are acceptable, and are not. It doesn't mean that you can't love the countryside or the ocean breeze or a partly cloudy 77° day.

Little children, time nears the end: and as you have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; so by this we realize that the end is near. They (the antichrists) went out from us , but they were not of us. They left us, but they were not part of us; for if they had been part of us, they would no doubt have stayed with us: but they went out, so they'd be made obvious that they were not all part of us.

(In other words, they were once believers and have fallen away.)

But you have an anointing (spiritual calling) from the Holy One, and you know all things. (The Holy Spirit gives you instinct to discern who is a deceiver.) I haven't written to you because you don't know the Truth, but because you do know it, and there is no dishonesty in the Truth. Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son, doesn't know the Father: he that acknowledges the Son knows the Father also.

So let what you've heard from the beginning remain in you, and you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. And the promise that He promised us is eternal life. I've written these things to you concerning those who deceive you. But the anointing which you have received of Him abides in you (which is the Holy Spirit), and you don't need any man to teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things, and is Truth, and is no lie, and even as it has taught you, you shall abide in Him.

And now, little children, abide in Him; that, when He shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at his coming. If you know that He is righteous, you know that every one that does righteousness is born of Him.

Biblical Light Conclusion
Walk in the Light of Truth Summary

You can feel the love that John has for us, by the way he calls us little children, as Jesus called the Apostles. Let's sum up this part of his letter. Keep the Lord's commandments. Love one another. Don't love the world. And, there are many antichrists around, so abide with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit which are in you, and Truth and righteousness will abound.

Be sure to come on back soon and we'll continue our study of this lovely letter from John, right here at Daily Bread.

There is a force out there that is attempting to overtake us all; it is Satan. There is another force that is protecting us from him; it is the Holy Spirit. It is a battle for souls. This battle is called Spiritual Warfare, and like it or not, you are right in the middle of it.
