God's Covenant With Moses
The Moses Covenant in the Bible

Greetings from Daily Bread! It is important for you to understand that Christians are not under the Moses Covenant known as the Old Covenant, but rather the New Covenant.

Glad to have you here to share another slice of Daily Bread. The two chapters that we're looking at today are another farewell address that Moses delivered to the children of Israel.

An interesting thing to note is that Moses writes that these are the words of the Covenant that the Lord commanded him to make with Israel beside (in addition to) the Covenant He made with them in Horeb (Mt. Sinai).

I'll give you sort of a book report version, and you can read it word for word in your Bible.

God's Covenant With Moses Discussion
The Moses Covenant in the Bible Event

Moses united all the people of Israel together, including the women, children, and even the servants, to agree to God's covenant.

Moses told the people, Even though you saw the wonders that God performed in Egypt and all the miracles along the way in the wilderness, still, the Lord didn't give you full understanding until today.

For forty years through the wilderness, neither your clothes, nor even your shoes became worn or old. You ate no bread or wine or liquor and when the kings of Heshbon and Bashan came to battle, you defeated them and took their land ... So keep the words of this covenant, and you will prosper in all that you do.

If anyone ... Man, woman, child, relative or otherwise, turns away from the covenant, and thinks that all will be well, though they listen to their own heart instead of the Word of God, he will not be spared, and the Lord will bring the curses of the Covenant upon him. (We learned about those curses in the last Daily Bread!)

God's Covenant With Moses Explanation
The Moses Covenant in the Bible Prophecy

And when the generations to come, or a foreigner from a far land sees the plagues of the land and the illness that is upon it, they will know it is because they have broken the Covenant of the Lord.

Moses continues on in Chapter 30, but the inflection of his words now take on more of a prophetic tone.

When all these things come to pass, the blessing and the curse, and you remember them when you are among the nations where the Lord has driven you, then you will once again turn to the Lord with all your heart and soul, and He will gather you out of all the ends of the Earth and bring you back to this land.

He will bless you more than your ancestors, and cause you to love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul. Then He will put all these curses on our enemies and make you prosperous in everything you do, if you will listen to the voice of the Lord and keep His commandments.

Our Father is so merciful!

God's Covenant With Moses Truth
The Moses Covenant in the Bible Warning

This covenant is not secret or too hard to understand. It is not too far away to reach, that you should wonder who will bring it close enough that you may hear and do it. It is very near you, in your own heart and mouth.

Today I have given you a choice between life and good, or death and evil. Love the Lord and obey Him and He will bless you in the Promised Land, but turn your heart away and He will disown you, and you will perish.

Moses concludes this address with these words:

Deuteronomy 30:19-20

19 I call Heaven and Earth to record [witness] this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
20 That thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey His voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto Him: for He is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
