Moses Speech Explained - Moses Farewell Speech After 40 Years in the Wilderness Concern

Great to have you here for our study of the fifth and last book of Moses called Deuteronomy. What the book of Deuteronomy consists of, is a series of farewell messages from Moses to the new generation of Hebrews, soon to possess the Land of Promise.

Much of this book is elaboration of the law, but unlike the book of Leviticus, the main focus of the messages are directed to the laymen of the congregation rather than the priests.

As you read the words of Moses, you can almost picture him in a grandfatherly sort of way, lovingly admonishing the children of Israel to follow the Lord with all their hearts and avoid the mistakes their parents made in the wilderness.

Moses Speech Study - Moses Farewell Speech After 40 Years in the Wilderness Warning

In the first three chapters of Deuteronomy, Moses retells the events that happened from the time they left Horeb (Mt. Sinai) until after they killed the Amorites east of the Jordan and possessed that land.

Moses was 120 years old at this time. Do you remember when God first called Moses to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt and Moses didn't want to, because he thought he didn't speak well?

After you read the five books of Moses, can anyone say that Moses wasn't one of the most articulate people to ever live? He expresses God's message to the people in the most effective way possible ... Firm, yet tenderly.

That's a good lesson to us in our daily lives. I'm sure there are times when each of us feel under qualified to do a job that the Lord assigns to us, but our perception of what we can do is really not the important thing.

Moses Speech Truth - Moses Farewell Speech After 40 Years in the Wilderness Blessing

If we will just forget our own opinion of ourselves long enough to let the Lord work through us ... Each of us can accomplish whatever the Lord's calling for us may be, no matter how impossible it may seem to us. We just need to let go, and let God.

Everything you'll read in these first three chapters of Deuteronomy are things that we've studied before in Daily Bread, so relax and enjoy this great story-telling that Moses shares as he knows his time is short.

Remember, this is a man who has given the last 40 years of his life for the love of his God and these, His people the Hebrews, and Moses knows that these are his last words to them. It must have been a very emotional time for him as well as the people, knowing they would soon never see this loving soul anymore.
