The Fall of Jericho Bible Discussion
Joshua and Jericho in the Bible Events

Good day to you, and glad you're here to enjoy some Daily Bread and our study of the book of Joshua. This story may be familiar to you. It was a remarkable event that happened as Joshua led the children of Israel in possessing the Promised Land.

The city of Jericho was closed up tight for fear of the children of Israel. Let me explain. The city (as many cities did back then) had a wall around it, with gates at the "entry" of the city, so, with Israel's presence so near, nobody dared leave or enter the city.

The Lord told Joshua that he had given Jericho into his hand, meaning, the Lord had given Joshua the power to defeat Jericho.

So God explained to Joshua the means by which the children of Israel should possess this city, and there can be no doubt that divine intervention was the only way this could have transpired. Decide for yourself:

Each day, for six days, the Ark of the Lord was carried once around the city, then back to the camp. Seven priests sounding seven trumpets went ahead of the Ark and the army of Israel went ahead of the priests, with the rear guard following behind the Ark.

Except for the priests, continually sounding the trumpets, the rest of the procession was in complete silence as they were commanded not to speak a word until Joshua gave the order.

Joshua and Jericho in the Bible Prophecy

On the seventh day, beginning at dawn, they circled the city in the same manner, seven times, and at the seventh time, Joshua ordered the people, Shout, because the Lord has given you the city, and the city and all that is in it shall be accursed to the Lord, except Rahab and all that are in her house, because she protected the spies that we sent.

Don't take anything out of the city or you will bring a curse upon yourself as well as the camp of Israel. But all the silver and gold and vessels of brass and iron are Holy to the Lord and they will be put in the treasury of the Lord.

So the city of Jericho was surrounded by the army of Israel and when they all shouted with the trumpets, the wall of the city fell down flat without even being touched.

Joshua and Jericho in the Bible Blessing

Every man forged straight ahead of him into the city and totally destroyed all that was alive inside, except for Rahab and her family and all she owned.

They brought her out of the city, outside of the camp of Israel and burned all the city, leaving only the silver and gold and vessels of brass and iron.

Joshua gave strict orders, saying, Cursed be the man, in the Lord's eyes, who rebuilds Jericho. He will lay the foundation in the time of his firstborn and in his youngest son he will set up the gates of it. You can read about the fulfillment of this prophecy spoken by Joshua in 1 Kings 16:34.
