The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans
Chapter 1
Our Powerful God
The Power of God & Purpose of God & You
Nice to see you back here at Daily Bread! Now that you've finished
the Acts of the Apostles, you're in for a real treat because the
author of the next fourteen books of the New Testament is the Apostle
Paul.
Looking back at Paul's ministry, you might remember that Paul wanted
to go to Rome, knowing that the need for the Romans to receive the
Gospel was very great (Acts
19:21). Why was it so great a need for the Romans? Because the
majority of the world at that time was ruled by the Roman Empire, and
Paul wanted to spread the Gospel as far and wide as he possibly
could. Also, the Lord Himself told Paul that he must bear witness in
Rome (Acts
23:11).
This letter begins with Paul expressing his wishes to the Romans to
visit them, so we can assume that it was written before he was
imprisoned there, and that it was one of Paul's earlier writings.
Powerful God Truth
The Power of God & Purpose of God Path
First Paul identifies himself as an Apostle that was chosen and
prophesied about in scripture to spread the Gospel of Jesus, and
gives Him glory for His Grace to
those who are faithful. Then he addresses his letter to all the
Christians in Rome with a greeting of grace and peace from God and
Jesus. He thanks God for them and mentions that their faith is known
about worldwide and promises that he sincerely hopes that he will at
last be able to visit them.
For a long time Paul wanted to visit Rome, and for one reason or
another he was always unable to. He wanted to share his passion for
Christianity with them, but there were so many places where he had to
preach the Gospel ... Remember, he was responsible for spreading the
Word to all the Gentiles ... Non-Israelites ... That's a lot of
territory. But he didn't want those in Rome to feel neglected or that
he wasn't ready to preach to them for any other reason.

Romans 1:15-23
15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the
gospel to you that are at Rome also.
16 For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it is
the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the
Jew first, and also to the Greek [Gentiles].
17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from
faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by Faith [Habakkuk
2:4].
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven against
all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold [prevent] the
Truth in unrighteousness;
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest
[shown] in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of Him from the creation of
the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are
made, [Job
12:7-9,
Psalms
19:1-6] even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they
are without excuse [they are not pardoned]:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him
not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain [prideful] in
their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible [immortal]
God into an image made like to corruptible [mortal] man, and to
birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
This may sound a little confusing, but if you looked up the scripture
in Job and Psalms, you know exactly what Paul is getting at here. If
Paul were here right now, in today's language he might say, God makes
Himself known to all that He creates.
Powerful God
The Power of God & Purpose of God
Romans 1:24-32
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through
the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between
themselves:
25 Who changed the Truth of God into a lie, and worshipped
and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for
ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections:
for even their women did change the natural use into that which is
against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of
the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men
working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that
recompence of their error which was meet [they got what they
deserved].
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their
knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate [corrupt] mind, to do
those things which are not convenient [righteous];
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication,
wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder,
debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters,
inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without
natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit
such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have
pleasure in them that do them.

universal, but it is timeless as well. Come on back soon, and we'll
