Biblical Conscience in the Bible Explained

Back again for more Daily Bread? It's great to have you here! We're resuming our study of Paul's first letter to the Corinthians and he's about to give the Corinthians a comparison to ponder.

When a person becomes a Christian, they begin to receive and recognize the Spiritual gifts that are bestowed on them. Paul warns the Corinthians not to get charmed (by false teachers, whispers, etc.) into thinking that they were immune from danger because of these blessings. He gives them the example of the children of Israel in the wilderness, how they were baptized into the covenant of which Moses was the mediator, under God's protection, but even they had problems.

They witnessed all the signs and wonders and miracles that the Lord worked in Egypt to bring them out of bondage, then parted the Red sea, provided food from heaven and water from rocks, all the while, being protected by Christ. But they got complacent. They made a golden calf and worshiped it, they fornicated, they were ungrateful, they murmured ... So God wasn't very happy with many of them and they were destroyed in the wilderness.

Biblical Conscience in the Bible Quest

Numbers 14:29

Your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward which have murmured against me.

Now, these things became our examples, with the purpose of teaching us that we shouldn't act as they did, or be idolaters, as some of them were:

Exodus 32:6

And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

Biblical Conscience in the Bible Journey

And we're not to commit fornication, as some of them did, and in one day twenty three thousand were destroyed. Let us not tempt Christ, as some of them did, and were destroyed of serpents.

Numbers 21:6

And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

Nor should you complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

Numbers 16:32

And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.

Now again, all these things happened to them for examples: and they are written for our instruction ... Others have fallen, and so may we. But this next verse is very interesting!

1 Corinthians 10:13

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

This is a very important thing to remember. Many people like to blame God for many things that happen to them, not only temptation. But look at the Truth. He always gives you the choice to say no to temptation.

As for other things that people blame on God, there are many things that aren't meant for us to understand. If you read the book of Job, you'll find that a lot of things happened that Job could have asked, Why did God let this happen? And indeed, he did ask.

But never did he get angry with God Himself, or blame God. He didn't like the circumstances he was in, but he always maintained his Faith and Love for God. An important lesson.

Lastly on the subject, Paul implores them to flee from idolatry. That may not really make a big impression on you, since the word idolatry isn't really used much in our day and age, but I'd like to point out two things. First, idolatry doesn't only mean worshiping an image, it means putting more importance on anything other than God.

It could be a living person, an addiction, a video game, a collection, a pet, a possession, a car ... Just about anything. If it's more important to you than God, it's idolatry. Second, note the word flee.

When you think of someone fleeing from something, you don't imagine them simply abstaining from it, you imagine them running from it, so, just so you get the emotion with which Paul is warning us about this practice, remember the word flee.

Now remember, the new Christians at Corinth have devoted their lives to following Jesus. Think of new Christians today. When a person becomes a Christian, do they completely excommunicate themselves with friends and family who are not Christians and never visit them? If that were the case, how would lost sheep ever find their way to Jesus?

However ... To participate in idolatry with them would certainly not be the way to glorify Jesus or the means by which to save a soul. Paul recalls to them the Lord's supper.

Paul says in effect ... You're intelligent people ... Think over what I say.

In participating in the Lord's supper, are we not declaring that we are in communion with Christ? It also symbolizes that those partaking of the Lord's supper are one ... The body of Christ.

Look at the Jews after the flesh (who had not converted to Christianity). Those Israelites who offer sacrifices to God, and eat of those sacrifices are professing that they are one and in communion with God.

So it stands to reason that those who participate in sacrificing to idols, and eat the meat offered to the idols, are professing that they are in communion with their fellow idolaters, and that they are in communion with the idols (devils) they worship.

Probably knowing that some would recall that previously Paul said:

1 Corinthians 8:4

As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.

He elaborates ... What was it I said? That idols aren't real, so that makes everything okay? No, The sacrifices that the heathen sacrifice are to devils. The idol is nothing, but to the worshiper it is real. It was demon worship, and to partake of it would denote that one was in harmony with others they are feasting with. For a Christian to participate in this would be to show others that they approve of it. And the last thing that Paul would want is for the new Christians of Corinth to be in communion with devils.

You can't have communion with the Lord and communion with devils ... The two are so contrary that it's unfathomable.

Wouldn't doing such a thing be testing the Lord's resolve? Is anyone that strong?
