Pleased to have you back again for more Daily Bread. As we continue our study of this epistle from Paul, one interesting thing to note is that if you were from Colosse, Paul didn't visit your city on any of his three missionary journeys or on his journey to Rome, but someone else who learned about Jesus from Paul, probably Epaphras, brought the Gospel to Colosse.

Notice that he writes with the same loving concern that he demonstrates in the letters that he wrote to the people in cities that he met personally and developed friendships with.

Colossians 2:1-8

1 For I would [I wish] that ye knew what great conflict [emotion] I have for you, and for them at Laodicea [a city less than 10 miles from Colosse], and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh [those I haven't met face to face];
2 That their hearts might be comforted [encouraged], being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement [that you will have the rich experience of believing for certain] of the mystery of God [which is salvation through Jesus], and of the Father, and of Christ;
3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile [deceive] you with enticing [pretty] words.
5 For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order [seeing your discipline], and the stedfastness [loyalty] of your faith in Christ.
6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him:
7 Rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
8 Beware in case anyone spoil (ruin) you through philosophy and vain deceit, following the tradition of men, after the principles of the world and not after Christ.

Let's think of a couple of examples of what Paul is talking about in Verse 8, but first, a Daily Bread Crumb. What is philosophy? It's a theory. It is the belief(s), concept(s), and/or attitude(s) of an individual or group.

  • Example 1: The Big Bang Theory, which is the philosophy that at some unknown time ago, there was an explosion, which caused the universe to exist, the constellations to form, the planets to find their places in space, the stars, the sun, the moon, the earth, etc., to all operate the way they do, and your heart to tick.
    Maybe some kind of accidental molecular collision or something like that occurred, but the theory is that the source of the universe and everything in it was anything but divine.
  • Example 2: The Theory of Evolution, which is the philosophy that the universe, (including human beings) was formed by generation after generation of developmental changes of things adapting to their surrounding environment, and that every living thing exists and possesses it's form and existence because of this process. In other words, the credit of creation is given to cells, which somehow know how to progress into humans, plants, planets, galaxies, etc. No credit is given to God.

Okay, now you've got an idea of what men teach, so let's go back to Paul's letter and we'll read Verse 8 again. He says:

Colossians 2:8-15

8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
9 For in Him [Jesus] dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. [In the Trinity or the Godhead,the three are One because in Jesus' body lives the divine nature of God, fully. He is the essence of, or completely ... God!]
10 And ye are complete in Him, which is the head of all principality [spiritual beings] and power:
11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off [purging] the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
12 [Those sins are] Buried with Him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with Him through the faith of the operation [power] of God, who hath raised Him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened [made alive] together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out [erasing] the handwriting of ordinances [the commandments, the Old Testament, or the old promise] that was against us, which was contrary [incompatible] to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross;
15 And having spoiled [destroyed] principalities [spiritual beings] and powers, He made a shew [mockery] of them openly [for all to see], triumphing over them in it.

To explain this a bit more, we were trapped in our sins in the Old Covenant. The devil and his associates thought they had it made because it was next to impossible to make enough sacrifice for your sins. Can you imagine, a lamb for every time anyone had a foul thought?

Now how about each person in the world. There just ain't enough sheep. Well, when God sacrificed Jesus for our sins (think about that, God traded His Son for the forgiveness of our sins), He opened the doors to Heaven for us. This was a major defeat for the devil, and with salvation available to the Gentiles as well as the Jewish people, it was an extreme setback for evil.

The devil, working through the Jewish people, thought that crucifying Jesus would be a victory, when in fact, when Jesus was lifted up on the cross, our sins were lifted up out of our souls. Jesus took our sins with Him (John 12:31-32). Back to Paul's teaching now.

Colossians 2:16-17

16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat [in what you eat], or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days [these were all feast days required to be celebrated or observed in the Old Covenant]:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Being "of Christ" is being of the New Covenant. If you want to learn more about feast days of things to come, see the following study:

Next Paul warns the Colossians of something that still goes on today. Many think that they are unworthy to request audience with God directly, so they implore mediation from angels or dead saints. This is not Truth.

Colossians 2:20-23

20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments [principles, rules, laws] of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to [controlled by, accountable for] ordinances [laws],
21 [Such as] (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines [teachings] of men?
23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

What? These rules may seem good, for rules of this kind require strong devotion and are humiliating and hard on the body, but they have no effect when it comes to conquering a person's evil thoughts and desires. They only make him proud.
