How to Be a Good Housewife Recipe

Wool and flax ... Wool, as you know is primarily used to make garments to keep one warm. Flax provides the fibers that linen is made from. What do you think of when you hear the word linen? You probably think of your best tablecloth and matching napkins or your finest woven sheets. We could probably come up with lots of analogies for the first part of this verse, like things that a woman could learn how to make with these things and how they would relate to how to be a good housewife, and we'll discuss stuff like that a little bit later, but perhaps part of the message to find in this Bible verse is that one of the traits of a good wife is that she seeks and strives to put forth her best effort to do her finest job in serving her home as a good housewife.

That sounds a little funny at first, to 'serve' your home after all, we serve the Lord, and we serve others. We serve people, not inanimate objects. But our homes (should) have a place in our hearts that is dear to us and we should treat it with love. That is not to say we should idolize it or worship it or put it before God, but we should nurture it for the special place that it is.

Speaking of serving your home, in today's world, most women work outside of the home. Their finest work, the majority of their effort, both physically, mentally, and time wise, is spent on people other than their families. And one may argue that Jesus said that anyone can care for their families, but when you serve others, that is what sets you apart.

We all know that is true, but He certainly did not mean to neglect your own, but rather to find a healthy balance. You may argue that the money that women earn helps support the family, so that means the effort and time spent at work away from the home is in essence for her family. I suppose you could make a case for that, if money or material wealth is what you believe God intended women to achieve as wives and mothers.

Everybody knows that having an adequate amount of money makes life easier, but being a Christian, you know that the purpose of life goes way beyond that. We always pray for the will of Almighty God to be done through us, so why don't we seek to achieve that, instead of seeking to achieve the almighty dollar? Let's look at all of this a little closer.

Job or Vocation, What is God's Will? God gave men and women different responsibilities on this Earth in the Garden of Eden.

What do you think this Scripture is saying about how to be a better housewife? Who do you think is the "bread winner" of the two? While you think about that a while, what do you suppose God meant by

and thy desire shall be to thy husband and he shall rule over thee.

Don't forget, Eve had taken the lead in the transgression, and as a reparation, or in turn, so to speak, of her offense, she is to be subject to the will of her husband. In other words, the determination of the woman's will is to be yielded to her husband, and accordingly, he shall rule over her.

We'll talk about that subject in detail later on too, because our focus here is on the woman working outside the home. So notice that God did not, in His judgment of Adam and Eve (which all of mankind has inherited), include any addendums that say, "In the instance of financial hardship, boredom, pursuit of self worth, or any other worldly circumstance, woman shalt disregardeth my Word in Genesis 3:16-19."

Ouchie.

Financial concerns are most womens' justification for working outside the home, but are most of the things those finances are used for, really necessary? And can they truly bring anyone closer to God?

This is a very sensitive subject, and I would suppose that most Christian women who work, think that their job (or their income) is very important. Some of these same women naturally want to walk the walk of Faith, but to accommodate what the world dictates, they have chosen to spend 8 hours a day, serving the world. Another 8 hours of their day, they spend asleep. That leaves 8 hours to tend to their husband, their home and their children, in transit to and from and in preparation for work, and let me ask you, how much time do you think she can squeeze out of that 8 hours to spend with the Lord?

Let me tell you another little story. A true story. It's in your cookbook (The Bible). You've probably heard it before, but maybe you never thought to apply it to your own life as a good housewife. Jesus once went to a village and a woman named Martha invited Him into her home. Now, Martha had a sister named Mary, and she sat at Jesus' feet and intently listened as He talked. During the visit, Martha grew frustrated because of the preparations of food and serving and such, and complained to Jesus, saying, Don't you care that my sister has left all the work to me? Tell her to help me.

The Lord answered, Martha, Martha! You're worried about doing so many things, but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her. You can almost imagine Martha, immediately untying her apron and kneeling on the floor, scootching Mary over so she could hear what she had been missing.

So, what does this have to do with you and how to be a better housewife? Let me just ask you a couple of questions. Do you think it's a ridiculous thing to expect a woman to quit her job and serve the Lord? Does it frustrate you because God won't put your job ahead of your relationship with Him, even when your job is so important? (But is it, really?) The audacity of God, to believe that your life belongs to Him! Do you know what you're missing by not surrendering it to Him?

Let me ask you, who will suffer if you quit your job? Now, I suppose you could quit your job and end up in a very bad way if you don't include the Lord in your plans. But would it be worth it to Jesus for you to drive a less expensive car, and spend more time serving Him? Would it be worth it to Jesus for you to wear clothes that weren't so new, and go without that new pair of shoes, to spend more time with Him? Well, I could give you about a million examples of how people could still live comfortably enough without the woman of the house needing to work outside of it, but instead I can't help but to just remind you about Jesus saying, Sell all and follow me.

The Truth is, most people don't want to give up the lifestyle they've become accustomed to and the luxuries they enjoy so much, to do something as absurd as spending their life following God's plan. It's so impractical! (Tongue in cheek, of course.)

Many people think that their purpose in life is the job they hold. If you were to ask anyone you know to describe the essence of who they are, how many would name what they do for a living before they mention that they're a Christian or that they possess the traits of a good housewife? If this describes you, you may want to check out this study:

Here's a big difference between one's purpose and one's job, and God's plans for us reach far beyond what we can imagine. Whether you're a rocket scientist or a stay at home Mom, the "job" that your Father has planned for you may be much simpler (but much more important) than you ever dreamed. For instance, you may only be a wife and mother in the eyes of some, but in the eyes of your Father, you may be the mother of His next Prophet. On the other hand, you may be the most intelligent, highly esteemed professional that many people know, and yet a twenty dollar bill that you give to a homeless person next week may be the whole reason you were put here on Earth. Only God knows the depth ... Or the simplicity of it all.

If boredom, pursuit of self worth, material wealth, or any other reason compels you to deviate from God's plan, encourage yourself to seek His answer to whether or not you are doing His will. Certainly, there are well grounded circumstances in some peoples' lives, which make it necessary for a woman to work, and surely God considers those situations. This does not mean that you're not a true wife. But look closely and truthfully at your own personal situation and ask His guidance. He will help you determine if you are being selfish, or if you are walking on the path that He has planned for you.

Of this, you can be sure ... When the prime of your life is over, and it's your last days, and you're looking back on the amount of time you spent with God and with your family, you won't be saying to yourself, "Gee, I wish I had spent more time working for "things" instead of serving the Lord, His way." When it comes to material things and self indulgences, less is more in the Lord's eyes.

You can make being a virtuous woman the best full time job to ever exist, and when God sees that on your résumé, and your belief in Jesus Christ, there are promotions awaiting, like being the bride of Christ, and like going to Paradise!

We love our stuff though, don't we? And new stuff really makes us feel satisfied. But have you ever noticed just how temporal that feeling is? Especially when something new and different appears on the market, then all the appeal from the last gadget we indulged in vanishes and our attention is spent coveting the newest, latest, greatest thing available. Do any of those things really assist you in how to be a better housewife?

Did you know that in some cultures, the older an item is, the more worth it has? Not monetary value, but sentimental value. Think about that for a moment. Sentimental value means there is emotion tied to something ... It means more to you and the 'luxury' does not wear off. These are the wool and flax to seek. Every good example that you pass down to another soul is a piece of the fabric that builds virtue in them, and they pass it on, and it's a very selfless process. Make virtue an heirloom in your family. Cherished "things" don't have to be material things. Seek, find, give.

Though at first glance, it may sound like seeking wool and flax is the knack for being able to improvise when it comes to material needs, if you give it some thought, there may be several hidden truths to this phrase, for instance, it could imply a lack of laziness, or one might even think of Jesus as being the "fiber" of their life, so metaphorically, it could represent seeking the Lord or seeking how to be a better housewife.

Now, on with the remainder of Verse 13:

Work willingly with your hands. Be creative out of the voluntary goodness of your heart. Some women think they're just not cut out to be a homemaker, and they blame it on a lack of creativity and/or skill, as if the Lord would hold back the traits of a good wife or the ability to be creative if they dedicated their life to serving His will. Some may even think it's a degrading suggestion. That's what the world has taught people. Some people refer to women who don't work outside the home as Domestic Engineers, just to make it sound important. My friend, it is the most important job a woman can possibly have. I personally prefer the description, Handmaiden of the Lord, but, you should choose whatever you think is suitable.

How to be a Better Housewife Advice

There are plenty of ways to serve God as a virtuous woman in your home. Countless, in fact. If you're at a loss for ideas, dig deeper. Ask God what what you can do. Do you think He wouldn't be so happy to receive a sincere request from you to reveal what His plan is for you, and what calling He has given you as a Christian woman eager to serve Him? His answer may come to you in a dream, or in something that another Christian may reveal to you, or in prayer, or you can always ask Him in the Word. Just ask in the name of Jesus Christ that He show you His answer, then open your Bible to any page and point to a verse. Pray for Him to give you discernment so that you understand what He is saying to you. You can ask in the Word about anything.

Let me give you just a few suggestions of how to be a good wife and mother ... How you may serve the Lord at home in case you can't think of any:

• Home school your children
• Hold a daily or weekly Bible Study for other stay at home Christian women
• Plant a garden (How does that serve God? It keeps you out of the world and close to nature, which God created.)
• Cook more
• Clean more
• Sew more
• Read your Bible and learn more

You may find that the money you spend on childcare, a second car, insurance, and gas for it, a housekeeper, eating out because you have no time to cook dinner, eating lunch out, work clothes, etc., may be more than you make.

If you feel like there will be something missing in your life because you choose to walk the Christian woman's walk with God, instead of serving the world, you are absolutely right. You'll be missing the ingredients that don't belong in the recipe for the Lord's perfect bride. It will take time and effort worth spending to replace the missing ingredients that you once used in your old recipes, with the fruits (the traits of a good wife) that belong in your new one. Keep searching for them. If you feel like there's an emptiness inside of you after you've begun to make progress and you can't figure out why, it's because you've gotten rid of some unneeded and unwanted ingredients and there IS an empty space that you'll soon fill with fresh new ingredients. God has given you gifts that you don't even know you have.

The more you grow and mature as a Christian woman and learn how to be a better housewife, the more complete you'll feel. Where there's a will, there's a way, and if it's God's will, there's definitely a way! Always remember that any time you remove something bad, even though it is spiritual, not physical, you will feel an emptiness, but don't let the enemy of your soul convince you that something is wrong. It's just a space that's waiting for good to be planted there to replace the bad that was removed.

Oh, and another thing about that empty space ... Fill it as soon as you can. If you have a job and decide to quit, you'll likely have 8 hours or more of time to fill, 5 days a week. It will become "idle" time if you're not busy doing something and what happens to women who have a lot of time on their hands? They become a target for the enemy.

Of course, if you're a woman in a situation where it is mandatory that you work outside your home, that doesn't mean that you can't be betrothed to the Lord. It just means you'll have to work harder to become and/or remain virtuous because of all the outside influence that you'll inevitably be exposed to.

If you ever need encouraging words, you can always turn to your Bible ... Your cookbook ... And the Lord will comfort you. Here are a few verses that you might want to reflect on as you ponder on your desire to serve the Lord.

They say that you can't teach an old dog new tricks, and another popular phrase that people use is, "I'm set in my ways," when they don't want to change because of inconvenience or selfishness or lack of understanding of truth or anything else. My friend, don't forget, there is still that little girl inside of you that we're on our way to find, so forget about old nonsense sayings and keep an open mind and heart, and you'll find a youthfulness in your spirit that will change your attitude about life and love and you'll have a whole new world to explore as a child of God, no matter how old you are. Some day, wouldn't you love for a young woman to ask you How to be a better housewife, when they recognize that you possess the traits of a good wife?

No matter if you've been a working woman all your life, God does not hold that against you, He is full of hope for you that as you mature in Christ, your life will be more focused on glorifying Him than doing anything the world teaches is the standard for all. How to Be a Good Housewife? Choose the BE-YOU-tiful path.
